In 2010 Carnival was banned in Ouro Preto; however, authorities have decided to allow it in 2011. There are a number of places to stay in Ouro Preto. I lived there so if you are planning on going there for Carnival here are a few things you need to know.
* Despite being little Ouro Preto has a very powerful carnival. Most os the people that go there are from São Paulo or even people from Rio. Lots of "Mineiros" also turn up for the event.
*Ouro Preto does not have many hotel, so if you want to see what carnival is life here you need to book early.
*There are lots of "hostels" there due to the fact that there is a main university near by. As such, many students will decide to rent out places in these hostels to tourists that are visiting. This can be a very packed ordeal. Most times you will get a mattress to sleep on and they put you to sleep in the living room along with many other people. There are other occasions where you get to stay in a room, but this is more expensive.
*There are a lot of blocks to join on Ouro Preto so you cannot get left out in the fun
Have fun and remember do not over do it. I will add some pictures later on.
