Default Carnaval in Brazil. Some friends want to go, but how?

Hi, I am brazilian buthave lived in the us for 6 years. I have 2 friends (couple) that want to spend carnaval in brazil. I am not sure what to suggest. Should they get a tour with one of the companies from here that take people to brazil, or hook up with a brazilian agency, or just do it on their own?
    What's is safer? better?

    I appreciate your suggestions.

    Thanks

I always prefer individual travel. Taking a tour tends to make the whole experience kind of mass market if you know what I mean. Aside from that being on a tour means being constrained to the times of the rest of the group. Better to be free and do it on your own.

I don't mean a tour in that way you mean. They really want to go to carnaval parade in Rio. So I meant using one of those companies that take care of the whole thing. Sell them the tickets, pick in the hotel, bring it back, they have security too.

Yup a tour can handle the important things such as lodging and transportation so that you'll have all the time to have fun. You can search the net for affordable ones.
