Far along Dundas Street West, past the quaintness of Little Portugal and beyond the gentrification creeping out from West Queen West, there appears to be a dearth of good eating. The darkened windows of small store fronts and family homes line the streetscape but making the trek all the way to Dufferin will reward you with the enticing glassy facade of the Brazil Bakery and Pastry Limited.

Okay, what are brigadieros? They sound great. What kind of pastries and goodies are known to Brazil?

Brigadeiro is a simple Brazillian chocolate fudge candy created in the 1920s. It is named after Brazilian airman Brigadeiro Eduardo Gomes.
For further information see Wikipedia's entry on Brigadeiro.

    Ingredients

    Procedure

    1. In a heavy saucepan, mix the milk, cocoa and butter. Stir to dissolve the chocolate.
    2. Put over low heat and stir constantly with a wooden spoon.
    3. Continue stirring until you are able to see the bottom of the pot when you tilt the pan - the mixture should slide quickly. This should take 10-12 minutes.
    4. Transfer to a greased plate.
    5. Allow to cool.
    6. Butter your hands and roll the mixture into small balls (around 2cm in diameter) and roll them over the chocolate sprinkles.

    Variations

You can substitute the cocoa powder for 100g of baking chocolate. If you want a lighter candy use powdered chocolate (such as Nestlé Quick™). You can also put raisins or nuts in the center of the candy. You can decorate with powdered sugar instead, or cocoa powder.

Here is an awesome recipe for Brazilian cookies -

BRAZILIAN COFFEE COOKIES 1/2 c. granulated sugar
    1/2 c. brown sugar, packed
    1/3 c. shortening
    1 egg
    1 tbsp. milk
    1 1/2 tsp. vanilla
    1 1/2 c. all-purpose flour
    2 tbsp. powdered instant coffee
    1/2 tsp. salt
    1/4 tsp. baking soda
    1/4 tsp. baking powder

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Mix sugars, shortening, egg, milk and vanilla. Stir in remaining ingredients. Shape dough into 1 inch balls. Place about 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheet. Flatten to 1/8 inch thickness with greased fork dipping in sugar. (Press only in one direction) or with greased bottom of glass dipped in sugar. Bake until light brown (7 to 8 minutes).

    These are the best -
    Cajuzinho: Brazilian Peanut Candy

(from caju, "cashew"; literally, "little cashew") is a creamy peanut candy that is very popular at Brazilian parties. It is made of peanuts, cashew nuts sugar and condensed milk in the shape of a tiny cashew with a bold peanut flavor.
