I see sometimes in the web people saying are from Florianopolis that actually they are from Desterro. It was the first name, correct? I thought quite strange that your city has a name of a bad guy, Floriano Peixoto, how do you feel about that?

Many people from Florianopolis prefer to say that they live in Desterro and not in Florianopolis.
This is a polemic and historical question because the majority of the people think it's a "shame" being called Florianopolis. Floriano Peixoto brought troops to Desterro and massacred civilians and rebels...after while he went into Exile and as punishment he changed the name of the island from Nossa Senhora do Desterro to Florianopolis (City of Floriano)... I know there is still in Florianopolis a moviment of "100 years of humiliation" which fights for the city to regain the old name. Many people believe about false stories created by governments after Floriano Peixoto, that the city was liberated from the Rio Grande do Sul State and this new name is a tribute to the "beloved" Floriano... Can you believe???
Wow, that is an interesting historical fact. It is kind of like in Northern Ireland there is a city called Londonderry, but the Irish tend to call it just "Derry" due to their hatred iof the English conquers!
