I usually just take the cheapest flight I can find during the dates I want to travel. I do not pay much attention to the airline. Usually, I go to a website that sells tickets and do a search, because then I can compare the prices of all the available airlines.

I would take good airlines as it's really far from my place and don't wish to tired out from taking those long long rides by having uncomfortable seats and services.

I thought Varig offers the cheapest flights to Brazil. Maybe I'm just misinformed.
Nevermind. Did some research and it turns out that it is bought by Gol.
    Stupid me.

Brazil's national airline is Varig. It flies both domestically and internationally and offers cheap flights.

Varig is an especially good option to fly to Brazil with if you intend to do any domestic travel in Brazil.

American is the largest US carrier to South America so either them or Continental can get you to Sao Paulo or Rio de Janiero. United and Delta also fly to Brazil and those cities.

I would always fly with TAM. Believe me, the vulcano ash problem in europe can tell you. I got my plane from Brazil to London and in the middle of the air, instead to land in Heathrow we went straight to Madrid. When we get there, in a hour since all airoport were closed, TAM had already hotel for all passagens!!! I stayed in a very nice 4x hotel in the center of Madrid for 4 days, I considered an extra all inclusive holiday, with everything, 3 meals a day... TAM looked after us very very well.

I think that TAM (Transportes Aéreos de Marília) is currently the best airline company in Brazil.

TAM-- however if you need cheap flights you may want to consider AZUL. For the latter just book in advance and you will get a super deal-- there are days when they have special offers and you can get a ticket for as little as R$50

Azul is currently the best domestic carrier in Brazil, and fairly cheap as well. WebJet is usually the cheapest. TAM and GOL are the major players, but usually expensive and really not worth it. Avianca (former OceanAir) is fast growing, and the fly a mix of ancient Fokker100's and brand new Airbus319's.

Internationally, I find TAM mediocre at best, but if you are flying to/from US, the American carriers are not much better when it comes to service (no free alcohol, poor food). To/from Europe, I prefer Swiss and British Airways, alternatively Lufthansa. I avoid KLM and Iberia.
