Chrisb, here is some information I pulled off Wikipedia - "Recognition of same-sex unions in Brazil has occurred since 2004. Same-sex unions now enjoy the provisions of several constitutional principles and the absence of prohibitive legislation in Brazil. The Brazilian cohabitation (unregistered unions) is granting rights similar to marriage, such as adoption, as well as all the welfare benefits such as pension, inheritance tax, income tax, social security, health benefits, immigration, joint property ownership, hospital and prison visitation, IVF and surrogacy, etc."
I hope this helps you!

Foreigners can purchase land and property in Brazil in their own names on a 100 percent freehold basis; this is rare for an emerging market. Ownership of property in Brazil is an absolute and exclusive right as set out in the Brazilian constitution. In addition to sole ownership, it is also possible for property to be owned jointly by several persons at the same time through a form of co-ownership or condominium. A common form of co-ownership is purchasing property through a company, which can provide tax benefits.
