They can, but it is not easy. You have to come here for a certain amount of time, and then you have to prove that you are contributing to the economy. Getting married or having a child in Brazil speeds up the process.

Hello, yes as Sarah33 says -it is possible, but it is not one of the easiest things in the world. You will either need to get married to a Brazilian or have a child with a Brazilian to be granted citizenship. However, for those that do not want that sort of obligation to start off with, then you will need to show that your presence in Brazil will benefit the people and economy in some way.

There are moments when Brazil opens up amnesty to certain people. You can also try during this period to get your citizenship also.

If you have been living in the country for two years on legal grounds and not left you can also apply for Brazilian citizenship.

The first thing you want to do on your journey of becoming a citizen is to:

    1) Obtain a Brazilian Visa
    2) Reside in Brazil for a period of at least four years.
    3) Become gainfully employed in Brazil.
    4) Provide a letter of introduction to the Brazilian consulate.
    5) Learn to speak Portuguese fluently.
    6) Make sure your taxes are all in order.
    7) Make sure your taxes are all in order.
    8) You must also Prove that you have not been sentenced to any prison terms of more than 1 year in any other country in which you've resided.
    9) Fill out the appropriate paperwork and file it with the Brazilian consulate.

Brazil needs good professionals on "high-tech", and there are many Americans moving to Brazil and working in good jobs, specially in São Paulo state.

Can you join the military to gain citizenship? Or even at all without being natural born?

I don´t think so. I think you won´t gain citizenship by joining the military career. I think Brazilian military don´t accept foreign people.
