Southern Dynamism
Latin American carriers are expected to do well this year with earnings of $700 million and an EBIT margin of 3.6%, slightly above the global average of 3.4%, although this would be down from expected earnings of $1.2 billion and a 5.3% EBIT margin in 2010. The airlines definitely are playing above their weight in terms of leading industry trends such as cross-border mergers. At the recent Latin American Airline Assn. (ALTA) Latin Leaders forum in Panama, Avianca-TACA Chairman Roberto Kriete said that five airline groups (Aeromexico, Copa, Gol, LAN/TAM and Avianca-TACA) dominate the region, accounting for 75% of all flights.
