Taking classes and then trying to speak it in practice is probably the best way. If you don't use what you learn quickly, you will forget it.

Well, you have to read a lot and listen as well. I would suggest getting some newspapers in Portuguese and spending time to read those plus ordering news and movies in Portuguese. If you know someone that speaks the language, then you can also spend tim talking to the person to train your pronunciation.

I picked up a little bit of the language from my friends. But a great tool to use for mastering the Portuguese language would be to use Free Online Portuguese Lessons and Courses just go on one the popular Internet search engines and type in "Free Online Portuguese Lessons and Courses" I am sure you will find a wealth of knowledge on there.

Please, you should pay attention to the "verbs conjugation" that is very diferent from English, which is easier than Portuguese.

Buy a book with an audio. Compact Disk is normally included on a language book and make sure you are buying the best. You can also talk to any friends who knows how. Asking them may be the best solution if you really want to learn. If you are a good listener and you have a good headphones, earphones or speakers then there is also a Portuguese lesson in Youtube which you can watch for free and try to trust your self. Lastly, just enjoy learning!

Right: first find a brazilian boyfriend or girlfriend. Or a friend.... another thing is to join a brazilian portuguese class or school and then start reading and listening in portuguese to try to get the idea... If you know spanish or italian you will find some similarity that might help you. Also, try to watch brazilian films, can be with subtitles in english or other language, but try to concentrate in the people, to understand them and also the way they talk. Brazil is a huge country and the way that people speak is different everywhere. Even if you learn brazilian portuguese in the south and travel to the north you will struggle. Some people speaks singing, when others speaks really fast. Some people "eat words" and try to say something saying actually just half of the words.... But I'm sure you will be ok, it's nothing impossible, just dedicate yourself and study that I believe in a few months you can say some nice phrases!!!!

Just let them know that your not a native and tell them to speak slower for you so that you can catch up easily. Learning this language is quite challenging but on the other side its very interesting too. For sure, if you're really that interested in learning then you will really enjoy Portuguese. There are two important things to know in order to learn and its "Learning using money" or "Learning without using money". It is up to you which way you'll follow. I learned basic without using money. Want to know why? I befriended Portuguese-speaking people in our University. I tend to go with their group and ask if I'm confused. Portuguese-speaking people would be very happy helping others in learning their language. They are very supportive if you really want to learn. I also borrowed Portuguese dictionary so that I can easily look up and read words I find hard to understand. Best of luck on your learning.

I am trying to learn Portuguese and would like to find a local connection in the St. Louis, Missouri area. I am using Pimseluer which is great but I need to be around the language. Plus that added bonus of learning about the people and culture. I know I could pick it up if I was in Brasil fulltime.... but alas, I work in the states.

Can anyone help? I would greatly appreciate any information. The local junior college offers a course but they never had enough people sign up. I am hoping maybe someone has friends or family in this area.

The best way to learn Portuguese is your self motivation engine, because Portuguese, such as Spanish and Italian are languages originated from the Latin language, so you will find lots of words very similar into those languages. Good luck.

the best way of learning is by making portuguese friends and chatting in portuguese regularly. i am sure they will enjoy it, and you get a chance to learn for free and in a relaxed environment or you could just go online on something like www.learningportuguese.co.uk .

The best way to learn any language in the world is living in the country for at least 1 or 2 years.

Do what I did to learn Spanish. Start attending a Portuguese church, get a Port. bible, get a word picture book,a dictionary and a grammar.Start reading and writing, listening and speaking what you have learned.I have done it for many years and I am getting to be pretty good but I will never be like a native. It is not expensive and it works.

Just chat to the Brazilian people and study a good grammar book.
