Study / Work in São Paulo
Hello,
My name is Ian. I live in Holland and I'm 17 years old. In January I will turn 18 years old. My girlfriend lives in São Paulo. That's why I want to move to São Paulo in July to study there. I already decided what I would like to study, but I have another problem. I'm not very rich, so I will need a job to pay my study. My Portuguese is pretty good, but far from perfect. My English is good. I also speak Dutch and French and a little bit Italian and Spanish. Could anybody help me?

Hello Ian,
Sounds interesting and take it from me you have chosen a nice city to Study in. São Paulo is terrfic, been there and fell in love with the place. Lots of restaurants, libraries, night life activity, excellent transportation system, clean roads- you name it. Anyway, back to your question...You can try to see if you can get a scholarship to study in Brazil-- there are some scholarships open to foreigners here. Also, if you are not successful in getting a scholarship, then you can always work to pay for your expenses; however, in Brazil students can only work in the area they are studying-- anything outside of this and you can get into trouble. Working a studying is very difficult, expecially if you have day classes and have to work.
Do not worry about the Portuguese, when you get here you can perfect it. Plus, most people will understand what you are sying anyway. I suggest reading and writing in Portuguese every now and again to get into the habit of things so that when you movw in January you will be sharper. Seeing you speak so many languages youu could offer classes in São Paulo- on the side. You can easily charge R$30,00 per hour and most people will happily pay for it.
Hope my information helped.

Of course your information helped. Thanks a lot. I already know I can bring my scholarship, that every Dutch student recieves, with me to Brazil. It would be great if I could also find a Brazilian scholarship. But even if I would have enough money because of my scholarships, I would like to have a job. I'm an active person who loves to work hard. Have you got any idea where I could offer classes?

at first you should write some of your samples and submit them into the related blogs, forums and other official sites. you can also visit freelancing sites based on Brazilian visitors, workers. that will help you to find your destination. you can show your quality there and when you will tell them that you are coming to Brazil then they will gladly givw you a respective job. so start it now. try to get a job and submit your resume in those sites.
thanks

Like it was said before, you chose a great city to live in! I always praise São Paulo when I have the chance, because I know that the city holds great opportunities to every one.
Its just an idea, but have you ever thought about teaching/tutouring languages?? You speak dutch, french and english, so why not earn some cash teaching one of those languages in private classes?
Other idea: bars and night clubs are popping all over the city and the interation between bartender/customer is minimal, which means that your portuguese doesnt have to be great. So you should definitely check that out too. Neighborhoods with active night life include (but arent limited to): Vila Madalena, Vila Mariana, Vila Olimpia, Pinheiros, Moema, among many others...
