Yes I agree. You don't want to carry a lot of cash around with you. Better off just bringing your debit card. If it does get lost or stolen you should immediately call up the issuing company and have them cancel it. Good luck!

Yes. Card is the best way to buy stuff in Brazil. And safe! The most populars are mastercard and visa! Not so popular dinners and american express

I live in Brazil, I am a native Brazilian, and I prefer buy any stuff paying with Credit Cards. The credit cards are very well consolidated in Brazil, and safer than other countries, anyway, prefer to buy in good stores.

It is better to pay by cash when you can and avoid carrying large amounts of cash in Brazil. The credit card system here is not very safe- if someone steals your credit card they can use it to buy things if you do not cancel it in time. Unfortunately, some Brazilian stores do not bother to ask for identification when a credit card is presented which means that just about anyone can use your card if you are not careful.

I usually pay cash, sometimes you get a nice discount for doing so. Most shopping malls are rather secure. Like Barra shopping and that other nice one in Botafogo. Card works fine to but like the guy above says, I dont think I have ever been asked to show ID now that he mentioned it.

card payments are definitely safer. it really depends though if you are buying shoes or paying for a hotel. you have to consider that the criminality rate is quite high, therefore it would be not only more comfortable but also safer to travel around with a card instead of cash

I think it is better to pay in cash, because the dollar has been falling against BRL (Real). Not all street commerce has the device to pass the Credit Card.

It's definitely better to carry a debit card. If you lose it you can immediately call your bank and have it closed down so no unauthorized purchase can be made. In addition most banks cover fraudulent purchases due to identity theft, etc...

In my opinion the best way is to buy by cards, for safety reasons. Cards are accepted even in small business and stores. If you loose one you can ask to be blocked immediatelly. Take care!
