Doctors say they were not able to remove the tumor from Jose Alencar. He is listed as in intensive care and on a breathing machine.

The Sirio-Libanes Hospital said in a statement late Wednesday that he was in critical - but stable - condition.

The 79-year-old Alencar has fought abdominal cancer since 1997.

One of the attending doctors told reporters that Alencar is passing through his most difficult moment.
