Cariocas, as residents of Rio de Janeiro are known, are passionate fans of futebol, or soccer.

Locals of Rio de Janeiro call themselves Cariocas because of the Brazilian Portuguese variety spoken in the city of Rio de Janeiro (and metropolitan area) is called "Carioca" supposedly that is where the term originated from.

Carioca is a Tupi Guarany word, in other words, Carioca is a native indigene designation to White Men plus House (do tupi kari (homem branco) + oka (casa), "casa de homem branco"). In English it would mean House of the White Man.
