I live in São Paulo, and I had been to Lapa many years ago. Lapa is the old part of Rio de Janeiro, I mean the historical place.
In Lapa you will know more about the history of Rio, and you will find the famous "arcs", the same technology used to build the "water bridges" in Roman Empire to carry water from the mountains to the city. Lapa is near to the centre of Rio, and you will note the rests of the rails of the old trolley car (streetcar by cables), not used in Brazil anymore.

Lapa has a very old piece of history there called the Arcos da Lapa, it's a fantastic aqueduct constructed in the mid-18th century by colonial inhabitants. Among other important historical attractions there is the Passeio Público, the first public park of the city, built in the 1780s. This is a nice place to take your family.

A lot of parties are held at Lapa so that is one of the reasons why it is so popular. You will also notice that there is a lot of diversity as well. If you prefer more quiet places then Lapa may not be your cup of tea.

You got superb live music in Lapa, if you dont dance in Lapa you are not a dancer. Very local, cheap caipirinhas, good clubs. I would rank Lapa in the top 3 fun parts of any major citys in the world.
