A unique Brazilian festival that takes places in São Luís in June each year. Different folk displays presented, including bumba-meu-boi go here to watch the video:

The rhythm and dances known as tambor de crioula, or "the black woman's drum", which go all the way back to slavery times & feature women dancing to a tantalizing drum beat, are popular again in a Carnival celebration that's formative and spontaneous.
Marafolia, the São Luís micareta, is one of the country's most excellent and attracts thousands of tourists every October.

A must see while in the area is The Museum of Folk Art (also known as "Museu de Arte Popular"), which is also a center of folk culture, is located at Rua 28 de Julho. On this street you will find a number of houses ornamented with Portuguese azulejos.
