Brazil team tops class
Robert Scheidt and Bruno Prada of Brazil maintained their lead in the Star class after the second day of the US Sailing Rolex Olympic Class Regatta on Biscayne Bay.
Scheidt and Bruno have a five-point lead ahead of Fredrik Loof and Max Salminen of Swedent. Scheidt is a five-time Olympic medalist.
Loof is an Olympic medalist and a two-time world champion who is ranked third in the world in his class.
In the Finn class, Giles Scott of Great Britain won two races, adding to the two he won Monday, to give him a 10-point lead ahead of countryman Ben Ainslie.
Paralympic sailor Liesl Tesch of Australia, a newcomer to the SKUD 18 class, is leading with her skipper Daniel Fitzgibbon after four races. A three-time Paralympic medalist in wheelchair basketball, Tesch only began racing with Fitzgibbon three weeks ago.
He is a legend, said Tesch about Fitzgibbon, an elite sailor who became a quadriplegic 13 years ago and uses special systems on the boat to compensate for his limited ability to pull with his arms. Im catching on, but hes the brain, Im the arms.
Tesch, 21, has full upper-body strength, but she sustained serious damage to her legs when she broke her back in a mountain bike accident at age 19.
